Macroglossum stellatarum

Irish status: Common Immigrant

Hummingbird hawk-moth - Hummingbird hawk-moths are particularly fond of nectar and are fascinating to watch collecting it. They closely resemble a humming bird in appearance and behaviour hence the common name. Very difficult to photograph in flight. This one certainly gave me the runaround in Cabanas De Tavira in the Algarve region of Portugal. I have also seen these moths in Sligo Ireland but on that occasion I was not quick enough to capture an image!
