Aglais urticae

Small Tortoiseshell - Widespread over Britain and Ireland. This butterfly can emerge very early. Sometimes in January if the weather is warm enough. Nearly always one of the first butterflies we see each year. A beautifully striking butterfly that is most at home in nettle beds. These three photographed in my garden at Greaghnafarna Co. Leitrim.
