Melanargia galathea

Marbled White - This butterfly is mostly confined to southern areas when seen in Britain. It is absent from Ireland. It seems to like the sun on its back as it often seen with wings open on thistle which is one of its preferred food sources. Most of the food sources tend to be purple headed, thistle, scabious and the likes. I came across this butterfly in the Algarve in a field near the Alvor Estuary in Portugal.
