Macroglossum stellatarum

Irish status: Common Immigrant

Hummingbird hawk-moth - Hummingbird hawk-moths are particularly fond of nectar and are fascinating to watch collecting it. They closely resemble a humming bird in appearance and behaviour hence the common name. Very difficult to photograph in flight. This one certainly gave me the run-around in Cabanas De Tavira in the Algarve region of Portugal. I have also seen these moths in Sligo Ireland and the S'Albufera region of Majorca Spain.
